Sahasrara: Crown Chakra

One major detail regarding Chakras: They are energetic centers. (see subtle body) The energy within a chakra can be in deficiency, surplus, or balanced and free flowing. Don’t know where to begin? Read Chakras- At-A-Glance.

Sahasrara Chakra:The Seventh Chakra: The Crown Chakra. The Sanskrit word SAHASRARA translates to “A Thousand Petals.”

It is located at the crown of the head: the meeting place between the spirit and body. The convergence of all Nadis.

It is associated with Violet or White.

Ishvara is the element of the SAHASRARA Chakra. It is not like any other element, like Earth or water. It is Divine Consciousness. Its light contains all color vibrations and its brilliance is as powerful as a thousand suns, in the the way a thousand rivers can gather and create a sea. Read more on practicing Ishvara.

The lotus flower is commonly associated with:

  • purity

  • renewal

  • beauty

The CROWN Chakra is known as the door to Brahma.

Who is Brahma? He is the God of Creation and can be interpreted as the source of light and our pathway to Samadhi.

What is Samadhi? This is a meditative trance that is experienced as spiritual ecstasy.

The 7-Chakra System’s two ends: Chakra 1: Muladhara and Chakra 7: Sahasrara are energetically tied to each other in the way a coin has two sides.

  • Shakti resides in MULADHARA (Our ROOT Chakra). She holds the essence of Prakriti: How our creative energy flows through and infuses all the natural aspects of life – the meaning we draw from experience.

  • Shiva resides in SAHASRARA (Our CROWN Chakra.) He holds Purusha: Pure consciousness. The pure spirit, where there is no you separate from being.

We may see each wave as individual. We can witness its peak and feel the splendor, even taste the salt as it crashes on the surf- This is PRAKRITI.

But what about the space between, the ocean drawing back into itself to persist crashing yet another wave on the sand ad infinitum? This rhythm that binds them in a current is the source you cannot see, hear, taste. This inner peace of constant joy and contentment and is also known as PURUSHA, the absolute dimension of being.

MEDHA SHAKTI is the inexhaustible stream of energy that radiates from SAHASRARA. It is an uninterrupted weaving of Prakriti and Purusha. Our mental power and divinity depends on balancing this great MEDHA SHAKTI.

If your CROWN Chakra is blocked:

You may feel like isolated and alone, as if there is no guidance or light in your life. Your Medha Shakti may be depleted and in need of strengthening if you experience any of the following:

  • Boredom; Pointlessness
  • Depression
  • Lacking Presence – Unable to settle into the now
  • Lack of direction
  • Closed-mindedness
  • Cynicism regarding spiritual or sacred aspects of life
  • Fatigue: never-ending need to sleep for restoration
  • Isolation and loneliness; inability to connect with others
  • Inability to set or maintain goals

If your CROWN Chakra is Over active:

When the CROWN chakra has too much Medha Shakti you may feel superior to others, aggressive as you think you know more than most and because of this acquire condescending tendencies and become overly- critical of others. It is also a common theme that those with Over-Active SAHASRARA tend to disregard the importance of human interaction and will subsequently feel alienated.

Symptoms may Include:

  • Recurring headaches or even migraines
  • Schizophrenia or other delusional disorders
  • Insomnia
  • Disconnected from your body or human experience
  • Living in your head and apart from earthly matters
  • Obsessive attachment to spiritual matters
  • Manipulation
  • Seeking to guide or control others around you
  • Persistent in getting your way

Balancing a CROWN Chakra:

MEDHA SHAKTI is the energy of SAHASRARA.

Common disruptions to this inner source include:

  • Stressful environments or relationships
  • Conflicts
  • Worry
  • Resentment
  • Crying
  • Anger
  • Hate
  • Jealousy
  • Sexual intercourse
  • Revenge

So how do we build MEDHA SHAKTI up?

Relaxation of the Mind & Body is what strengthens our Medha Shakti. SANTOSHA or Trusting the process is helpful in restoring our MEDHA SHAKTI reserves.

Relaxation of the Mind:

– A valuable technique to quiet thoughts and strengthen the Medha Shakti is Mauna (silence.) Mauna helps us discern between our feelings and the expression of what we feel.

Meditation strengthens Medha Shakti

Between two musical notes there exists another note, between two facts there exists another fact, between two facts there exists another fact, between two grains of sand, no matter how close together they are, there exists an interval of space, there exists a sensing between sensing – in the interstices of primordial matter there is the mysterious, fiery line that is the world’s breathing, and the world’s continual breathing is what we hear and call silence.                       -excerpt from Clarice Lispector’s, ‘The Passion According to G.H.’

Visualize your entire being as a lotus flower, unfurling with a glowing white or violet light. Let your physical desires, needs, wants, and emotions fall into the pure void. Focus on this space between things: The bliss of just being, where there is no individual self every piece of you dissolves into light.

Side Note: Meditation is easier when you are behaving consciously. Remember to practice yamas, niyamas, reciting mantras, mudras, etc.

Relaxation of the Body:

-Asana exerts a positive influence on MEDHA SHAKTI and naturally balances our mind body spirit connection.

Spending time in Savasana is especially important when working on the crown chakra.

Shirshāsana (headstand),

Sarvāngāsana (shoulderstand)

Viparītkaranī Mudrā (Energy Regeneration Pose),

Yoga Mudrā (Forward Bend sitting on heels) and Shashankāsana (Hare) are particularly beneficial. Agnisāra Kriyā ,

Working with Stones and Crystals:

-Diamond, quartz, amethyst and other white or purple stones are ideal for healing the crown chakra. These can be worn as jewelry or held during meditation and energy healing.
